Traveling to Florence

The eighth day of the trip, we departed Rome by bus to Florence. Before we arrived, we took some side trips to a couple of other Tuscan towns: Pienza, in the heart of the iconic countryside, and Siena, an historic medieval town.

First stop, Pienza.

Absolutely unreal.

Siena was next up.

Just an absolutely stunning cathedral. It was planned to be extended, but the plague hit the town, and so it remains technically unfinished.

Austin

Went to Austin one weekend to hang out with Greg. Only took pics at Mt. Bonnell.

Kind of a pitiful skyline. I mean, once you’ve been to Hong Kong . . . ;]

Oh, and, Hong Kong.

Took the ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong island.

Probably my favorite of all the great skyscrapers there.

Victory Peak.

And pandas! There’s a Sea World type place on the opposite side of Hong Kong island. And seeing as we hadn’t seen a panda yet while in China . . .

The city at night. They have a light show, with music, coordinating all the lighting on the buildings, every night, for 15 minutes.

The 20-35 2.8 and 70-300 VR on the D700. Just one last post to go . . .

Parks and boats

The third day of Shanghai. It was far better than the first couple days, as the places were more cultural and we weren’t inundated with museums.

Mid shake

Went to a park in the morning. Everyone was out and about doing tai-chi and dancing and all sorts of fun stuff that just doesn’t really exist in most of the US.

A peak at a slum. See that McDonald’s umbrella? Classy.

Quite a look he gave me there.

And this, quite possibly, the worst thing. Ever. High School Musical has made it to China. Game over man. Game over.

Had the most delicious chicken dumplings (8 heaping dumplings) from a hole-in-the-wall along the market street here.

The cat is holding a newborn kitten.

We went boating on the river at night. Front row seats. Prerequisite “I’m on a boat” reference.

They really know how to advertise. A giant LED video screen on what was more or less a small barge. 3 stories high I’d say.

Mix of pretty much everything on the 700.

The third day of my China trip. Most images with the D700 and 20-35 2.8 or 28 1.8, a few with the D200 and 70-300 VR.

Atlanta Aquarium

School is finally over. Basically left as soon as I could. Drove up yesterday with Rockie and we said our sad goodbyes in the morning *le sigh*. Mom and friend sorta kinda dragged me to the aquarium afterwards, and I was kinda glad about it in the end.

This poor fish looked to be on its way out . . .

Apparently the Atlanta aquarium is the “world’s biggest.” It certainly is the world’s most commercialized.

Classic.

Saw a Titanic exhibit. Relatively interesting, they had recreations of the cabins and artifacts. This is not one of those (no pics allowed).

Oddly cute, certainly creepy.

They had live Cthulu as well . . . known as cuttlefish to the uninformed.

And then, the jellyfish. Now this was my favorite part – you just can’t screw up jellyfish.
