08.29.10 From northwest to far east

This summer has been surprisingly busy, moreso than the last, and I still find myself with a variety of tasks in need of completion – the final edits to Italy photos, uploading photos from some portrait shoots, and preparations for Hong Kong, where I’ll be living and studying for 10 weeks. Currently I’m in Portland, was recently in Eugene, and fly back to Texas on Tuesday.

Life is busy. While last summer I didn’t accomplish or partake in much due to sheer laziness, now it seems I’ve been getting behind on the to-do list because there’s so much that needs action. It is a much better circumstance though – idle hands, idle mind, or however that saying goes.

I’ll have some more substantial updates in due time. For now, I apologize, for there are some evil exes for me and my bro to beat in the Scott Pilgrim video game.

08.11.10 Reminder: 1-3-5 Print Sale

I’ve finished uploading prints for my print sale! There are about 140, many of them already reserved or purchased! Any reservations that aren’t picked up are going back up for sale on Monday too, so keep an eye out then. The response has been really great and I appreciate the support I’ve been getting greatly. And I always have prints available through my website under each image in my portfolio.

So head on over to http://andrewhefter.com/blog/2010/08/printsale/ and get some prints if you haven’t already!

08.10.10 Theatre of War by Richard Mosse

Theatre of War on Vimeo

Richard Mosse is one of my new favorite photographers. I’ve been looking at his work lately and found he made this video from his Iraq coverage. I’d love to see something like this in an exhibition format.

He also has a recent series from the Congo where he shot using Kodak Aerochrome infrared film. Absolutely captivating stuff. You can see it all at his website.

08.08.10 Review: MSI FX600 laptop

In preparation for a quarter abroad in Hong Kong, I figured now was the time to get a competent laptop on which I could Photoshop in addition to my usual online and entertainment activities. I had a few requirements in mind: Core i3 or better processor, dedicated/discrete graphics, and 4GBs of RAM, all for under $800. I was on the hunt for a few weeks before settling on the MSI FX600.

08.07.10 PRINT SALE $1, $3, $5 PRINT SALE SO MANY PRINTS FOR SALE

I am selling off a bunch of excess prints I have around the house/in the portfolio to earn a bit of cash, and also just to clean out unnecessary stuff. There are close to two hundred prints, of all shapes and sizes, loose and mounted, and conditions of varying quality – scratched, dented, undamaged, bad color matching, etc. I’ve got the first 50 or so up now and will be adding more each day.

As such, everything is being sold for either $1, $3, or $5, plus shipping. US domestic orders only, shipping rates are as follows (sorry it’s so confusing, but I couldn’t figure out a better way to handle this):

  • 8 X 10 or smaller prints: $5, USPS
  • 13 X 19 or smaller prints: $10, USPS
  • 16 X 20 or larger prints (loose): $20, UPS
  • 16 X 20 or larger prints (mounted): $40, UPS
  • Free Shipping on $30 or more worth of 13 X 19 or smaller prints, via UPS
  • 25% discounts for people who purchase $50 or more worth of prints
  • Avoid shipping charges, and pick up directly from me if you are in the Dallas area and willing to drive to Allen

All payments will be through PayPal, or cash if you’re picking up direct. Prints will be reserved for up to 1 week until payments are received and cleared. Also, I can’t take returns/make refunds outside of extenuating circumstances, so please be advised. All prints with images, specific notes (such as damage, mounting, size), and corresponding ID numbers, are listed after the break.

You must send an email to prints [at] andrewhefter.com listing the ID number(s) of the prints you would like. Everything is on first come, first serve basis.

Everything is signed, some prints may have dates, and most prints are either borderless or have a 1-2 inch border. All mounting is on white foam core, and all matting is with white matboard, unless otherwise noted. The majority of prints are $1 and $3, depending on size. The few $5 prints are both large and virtually undamaged. No prints have major rips, tears, or severe defects on the image itself, and most prints, unless otherwise noted, have some degree of scratching and minor denting (usually noticeable only under direct light). When appropriate, specific damage has been indicated – you can ask for further details on a specific print through email. This sale is indefinite until everything is gone (or I determine nobody wants my prints). Thank you for your support!

05.13.10 Some notes on the week

I finally decided to better integrate the blog with the rest of the site, so it’s a more seamless experience. Less confusion overall I think, and hopefully all for the better. Let me know your thoughts.

On a different note, I should be all over the world (literally) the next 6 months. I’m going to be in Italy for the first three weeks of June, and possibly spend a week or so up in Montreal early July. After a month long stint in Dallas, I’ll either be back in Savannah, or I may end up going to SCAD-Hong Kong for the fall. It’s not all confirmed yet, but I’m hoping that things line up and it does happen.

And on yet another note, it’s nice to see Sony finally release it’s Interchangeable Lens Compact (ILC) set of cameras, with the NEX-3 and 5. I think the tech behind the body itself is of huge importance, as it demonstrates that the APS-C spec can fit into a body as small as Micro 4/3 while still offering compelling features (HD video and tilting screen). The price is pretty attractive too. There are some kinks that look to need more work though, what with the bulkier lenses and some questionable design choices (the flash implementation and the dumbing-down of the UI are what comes to mind). But otherwise, it’s a move in the right direction.

I’m still holding out that Nikon will jump into the game and I’d be able to trade the ol’ D200 and get a svelte pancake on top of things. For the time being, I’m just hoping there’s either a drop in price for the Panasonic 20 1.7 (bringing the total cost of a micro 4/3 system to $600) or someone figures it out and designs a compact camera stripped of everything but the necessities. I am aware of that digital AE-1 concept, but I’m thinking something aside from just shoving a point-and-shoot inside an old film body. I want a tiny, digitized FM2n really. I wouldn’t even mind doing without an LCD if I could get a nice viewfinder (with frame lines). A boy can dream…

03.28.10 Alan W George

Some contemporary landscape work from Alan W George. The geometry of the spaces and tonal palette is rather captivating to me. You can check out more his work on his Flickr stream.

02.02.10 Olympus PEN E-PL1, new lenses leaked, via Photo Rumors

Looks like the EP1 is being downsized and will likely be $500 for the body only. Very tempting price point. Too bad the lens I’d want to use for this would be $400 (the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7). Guess I’ll just keep on dreaming…
